Every Urban Goat pochade is crafted by our skilled woodworkers using stunning figured hardwoods we select and mill in our California workshop.
Our hardwood box frames are not just prettier - they are stronger and lighter than machine shaped baltic birch pochades. It takes more time to select and craft hardwoods, but the quality can be seen and felt and will last you a lifetime of plein air painting.

European Orders: We do ship to UK and EU. but we invoice separately for shipping and VAT. It is usually $70 for FedEx delivery and 20% VAT, depending on destination, and takes about a week to arrive.
Built for painters more comfortable with a studio setup: painting palette at waist height and canvas at eye level. The palette and brush trays attach to your tripod legs using fold-out mounts, while the panel holder grips onto your adjustable tripod head with a low profile Arca-swiss plate.
The Urban Goat Gravitas has the quickest setup and most compact form factor of any gravity mount easel on the market. And it is beautifully hand crafted with hardwoods that we pick out and mill in our Palo Alto workshop.
Like our Alpine Goat pochades, the trays fold out and feature lampwork glass beads on elastic shock cord to hold your brushes secure and separated. The detachable panel holder uses our spring loaded “goat grip” mechanism to hold your paintings secure, yet allow you to insert or remove instantly with just one hand. When you are done painting, everything that might be messy with paint folds inwards, and the canvas holder detaches from your tripod and fits compactly between the brush trays.

Introducing our largest pochade to date - The Studio Goat - crafted with a solid Ambrosia Maple frame, lightweight basswood palette, brass components, custom leather and marine-grade snaps, locally milled aluminum mounting plate, unique lampwork glass beaded brush holders, and a beautifully figured hard wax oil finish.
The Studio was designed to accommodate larger pieces and offer more palette space to mix. With such a large format we think of this as a tool for your home base but we are proud to still offer it with all the same features as our smaller box allowing it to be set up anywhere.
At Urban Goat we value people and craftsmanship as much as innovative design and ease of use. Other manufacturers utilize industrial grade plywood ground out by computer driven machines to mass produce their easels. Whereas at Urban Goat we hand pick beautifully figured hardwood, and in our workshop our expert woodworkers (real people, not computers!) using over a hundred skilled steps craft raw wood, brass and aluminum into a pochade in which every tiny detail serves a purpose in the overall design - beauty, ease of use, function, and artist efficiency.
While crafting hardwood by hand takes more skill and effort than having a machine grind out plywood, we do it for multiple reasons - the Alpine is both stronger and lighter than theirs. We are able to fully align the grain of the hardwood to provide the most strength where it is needed most: along the spine and arms. This frees up more interior space - we provide over half an inch of vertical space above the palette surface for your paint dabs to safely live from one paint session to the next (3/4” for Deep dish varient). There’s even enough vertical space above the palette to safely close your Alpine with an 11×14” wet panel in the goat grip.

This custom version of pochade is made from select cuts of finely figured American Black Walnut, the palette and the top panel are hand sawn solid thin stock from the same tree as the frame. The Goat Grip ™ panel holder components are fabricated by local machinists. The leather clasps are cut, burnished, by our team, who also designs and strings the brush holder straps. Once built, the boxes’ beautiful wood grain is sealed and protected with two coats of Osmo hard wax, allowing you to mix your paint directly on the wood. The resulting artisan pochades have a more solid feel with a few extra ounces of solid panel, though they are still light enough to take on the road.
All items are hand made with natural materials by a small team of craftsmen in California. Handmade items may have slight variations and blemishes that are a result of the crafting process. Our most compact and lightweight box in made with our hand sawn and unique maple thin stock with a black walnut frame. Exterior dimensions are 12 by 9 inches, similar in size to an Edge Pro-Gear Medium paintbox, but weighing significantly less.
Ideal for painting on the go, the Mini Goat is small and light enough to fit easily in your day pack, with our without a tripod. The palette is large and deep enough to pre-load with oil paint before you head out. The Goat Grip panel holder supports paintings 16” in width and 12” vertically, but when painting small (6” by 10” or less), you may actually close the Mini Goat with your painting safely held inside above the palette mixing area; this comes in handy when the weather changes and you must pack up quickly, or space is too tight for a wet panel carrier.
